CHARLOTTE ELM RAVN

Visual artist. Born in 1972, in Växjö, Sweden. Lives and works in Hammenhög.

The exhibition Black Holes, Dark Matter, and Consolation consists of embroideries on paper, assemblages, and manually processed photographs. The works are part of different series, all revolving around existential and societal darkness, and serve as aesthetic attempts to relate to it—to see its nuances and to transform it into something poetic, while also finding counterpoints to hold on to.

Charlotte Elm Ravn´s visual art has evolved from her background as a performing artist and her experience of the body as an artistic tool. The monotonous, repetitive, and slow process of embroidery is, for the artist, a bodily and artistic act, a spiritual practice, and a kind of resistance. The assemblages also incorporate elements of a performative act in the form of repeating her grandmother’s crocheted tablecloths.
