MAGDALENA SVENSSON
Visual artist. Born 1965 in Torshälla, Sweden. Lives and works in Malmö.
Magdalena Svensson works with painting, primarily using acrylic on canvas and watercolour on paper as her main forms of expression. Her studio practice is intensely focused. She carefully chooses format, colour, and movement and explores how subtle shifts in composition can transform the character of an image. Constant attentiveness is required throughout the painting’s development, as she must remain aware of the emerging dynamics created by lightnes or weight, brightness or darkness. Equally crucial is recognizing when it is time to stop. Colours are mixed methodically, and brushes of varying widths are used. The artist’s gestures with the brush generate the movement and flow on the surface. The process demands a state of being both relaxed and fully concentrated.
The painting is an outcome of the artist’s deep interest in colour and bodily movement. When a work is completed, it often evokes a sense of something inexplicable – a tension between what can be controlled and what remains elusive. It is precisely this contradictory tension that fascinates Magdalena Svensson and drives her creative process forward. Since 2000, all paintings have been titled after the date of their completion, serving both as a method of cataloging and as a reflection on time.
The presentation of an exhibition is of great importance to the artist. Planning for the installation begins at an early stage. Sometimes the paintings are allowed to hover slightly above the gallery floor to create a sense of spatiality; other times, the works are arranged on the walls in a carefully considered structure.
For the exhibition at CG Gallery, Magdalena Svensson has created a new series of works where her interest in colour, light, movement, and spatial composition converge in a new encounter. She allows her return to acrylic painting to meet her recent years’ focus on the light-saturated watercolour technique in a rhythmic installation within the gallery space.
Magdalena Svensson graduated from Malmö Art Academy in 1997.
