PIERRE SANDGREN
Visual artist. Born 1963 in Malmö, Sweden. Lives and works in Malmö.
Pierre Sandgren is a painter inspired by the beauty of the unnatural world and the dullness of everyday life. His works do not understand natural colour, form and texture and probably do not express a commitment to the relationship between darkness, bright light and the void very well. Furthermore, he can say with a heavy heart that he never works with oil on canvas as this turns out to cause him dizziness and nausea. Unless someone forces him to do so under the threat of physical violence, of course. Sandgren uses exclusively a combination of a really thin impasto and insensitively rough glazes to create superficiality and a lack of brightness in his work.
His paintings are rarely landscapes, and they are often very unimaginative, unoriginal and simple depictions of the world and certainly not an expression of Sandgren’s non-existent emotional and spiritual connection to the supernatural world. Through his works, he does not hope to arouse a sense of wonder and awe. He hates the idea of inviting the viewer to contemplate the beauty and complexity of the world around us. So if you like them, you can form a club for bad taste with Pierre Sandgren – membership is free, but self-criticism costs extra.
For the exhibition at CG Gallery, Sandgren has chosen to abandon colour in his works, to instead concentrate the expression on an investigation of the gray scale. Black and white pigments of different nature and manufacturers have replaced his ordinary palette. The artist presents a coherent suite of paintings, drawings, objects and text works on the same theme.
Pierre Sandgren graduated from Malmö Art School Forum in 1994.
