STURLA MAGNÚSSON

Visual artist. Born in 1996 in Reykjavik, Iceland. Lives and works in Malmö and Iceland.

Sturla Magnússon often explores the boundaries between the physical self and the worldly objects that a person uses as an extension of the self. Within these boundaries he attempts to create narratives that the audience can interact with in a playful but often obnoxious way.

Sturla Magnússon has a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Malmö Art Academy (2024) and is pursuing a Master’s degree in Malmö. Since 2017 the artist has also worked with designing and building movie sets and props within the Icelandic movie industry.

The artist about the installation Emptiness as a Promise:
I’m trying to think of something.
Said the man wandering around in my backyard at the first hint of light.
What are you trying to think of?
I’m not trying to think of a forgotten something but simply something out of my reach.
What is it?
It’s not a question of what but when.
When what?
That’s not the question.
What is the question?
There you go again with the what.
When will you think of it?
That was much better but still not it.
What do you mean by it?
You are the one who brought it up.
It?
Just let me think.
Is the end troubling you?
No, I know the beginning well.
The man wandered past me, entering my house.
I followed.
My feet were wet from the morning dew, bringing in single strands of grass and leaving footprints.
The man sat down at my kitchen table and started drinking my coffee,
I didn’t mind. I walked back out, wanting to feel the cold wet grass under my feet.
I started thinking about what the man meant by something.
Walking in circles I did not find what I was looking for.
I could hear a voice asking me something.
I looked up.
What are you doing here?
The man asked, with my coffee in his hand.
The answer was on the tip of my tongue but out of my reach.
I’m trying to think of something.
